Job Description

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE: Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Ice Facility Operator is to perform the duties necessary to ensure the efficient operation and maintenance of the Westhills Arena and surrounding facilities in a safe and efficient manner or as directed. The Employee may be required on an ongoing basis to attend applicable training, workshops, seminars and courses at the discretion of the Employer to facilitate job knowledge and performance. The Employee may, particularly during slower times, be expected to help in other departments and facilities throughout City Centre Park. The Employee is expected to be a team player and help where needed.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Perform daily tasks associated with the safe and efficient operation of the arena and surrounding facilities at City Centre Park.

· Maintain and monitor ice surfaces of the indoor (and outdoor in season) rinks by daily inspections and reporting any required repairs of the ice surfaces.

· Assist in the operation of refrigeration plant and HVAC equipment by performing preventative maintenance functions, monitor and record periodic equipment readings.

· Operation of Zamboni and ice edger for floods and cleaning of ice surfaces.

· Perform maintenance duties related to the rink area such as performing manual flooding with a cart, painting the ice, and removing snow and ice.

· Perform general maintenance, custodial duties and program requirements as assigned, in the operation and maintenance of assigned facilities. Regular janitorial duties of the arena including, but not limited to, sweeping and washing floors, washroom and change room cleaning and disinfecting, power washing, garbage pick-up and general cleaning duties as necessary. Perform general maintenance duties in the overall facility such as painting, replacing light bulbs, and making minor carpentry and plumbing repairs.

· Refrigeration Plant operation and maintenance. Assisting to maintain and monitor ice plant by daily inspections and alerting the Facilities Manager of any problems. Advise immediately of all equipment damage, malfunction or unsafe conditions.

· Snow removal from sports complex sidewalks and emergency exits.

· Assist with maintaining and performing minor repairs to sports facilities mechanical equipment and refer all major repairs to the Facilities Manager for alternate contractors to be contacted.

· Take initiative to correct maintenance or risk management concerns and/or notify supervisor and other staff where appropriate.

· Maintain appropriate work records including incidents and accident reports, time sheets, duty sheets and other documentation and sign off as required.

· Monitor the facility during rental functions and events to ensure public safety and safe operations.

· Provision of emergency first aid services including documentation of all services provided.

· First response in the event of any hazardous situation. Assist in evacuation during emergencies.

· Assist with new staff orientation and provide in-service to staff on proper use of equipment.

· Open and close the facilities with appropriate security checks.

· Ensure access to the facility and services is by authorized clients only.

· Patrol the facility regularly to ensure rules and regulations are being followed. Inspect equipment and facilities for safety and take corrective action as required.

· Ensure fields are closed at the end of night shifts.

· Mediate disputes and minimize conflicts between clients.

· Safeguard merchandise supplies and equipment.

· Organize equipment set up and take down. Set up rooms for events.

· Assign and open dressing rooms.

· Comply with City Centre Park safety procedures.

· Maintain good public relations with customers, user groups and colleagues.

· Willing to attend continuing education courses as required.

· Assist with other duties as assigned by supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS

· First Aid/CPR or preparedness to obtain.

· Valid Class 5 driver’s license.

· Criminal Record Check.

· Previous experience working in an arena building operation and with ice maintenance. Demonstrated experience using major cleaning equipment, methods and materials.

· Knowledge of refrigeration principles and physical plant maintenance.

· Ice Facility Operator, Refrigerator Safety Awareness Course, or equivalent completed, or preparedness to obtain.

  • RO Course or equivalent preferred.

· WHMIS.

· Zamboni driving experience preferred.

· Able to work alone or with minimal supervision; personal qualities of reliability and cooperation.

· Able to perform rotating shift work necessary to fulfill the requirements of a 24h seven-day operation.

· Able to work overtime on short notice.

· Knowledge and understanding of, and ability to apply safety policies, standards and legislation (BC Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS) and able to use appropriate safety apparatus.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an ice arena environment primarily with some work at other recreation facilities throughout City Centre Park. Work in an office is limited to minor administration requirements. Employee will be subject to lifting and exposure to cold temperatures. Potential exposure to ammonia gas is possible. This job requires shift work evenings, weekends and holidays fluctuating with the needs of the facilities. Where possible the facility operator will take into consideration requests for preferred days or times of work or days off but there is no guarantee that requests will be accommodated and will only do the best to balance the requests of all Ice Facility Operators with the needs of the facility.
