Job Description

The YMCA of Northeastern Ontario is a dynamic charity dedicated to strengthening the foundations of communities by offering opportunities for personal growth, community involvement and leadership. We are currently looking for an Immigrant Services Program Volunteer to join our team of committed professionals. This is a volunteer position within the Association and is housed at the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario’s Elm Street location in Sudbury.

We are seeking a passionate and patient volunteer to lead and facilitate the English Conversation Circle for our Immigrant Services clients, who are available during the days and/or evenings for in-person & virtual sessions. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills and a friendly demeanor, creating a welcoming environment where participants feel comfortable practicing their English. Responsibilities include planning engaging conversation topics, encouraging participation, and providing constructive feedback to help improve language skills. Prior experience in teaching or tutoring English is an asset but not required. Join us in making a positive impact on our community by helping newcomers gain confidence and proficiency in English.

START DATE: As soon as possible
LOCATION: Sudbury, ON
HOURS: 1 - 3 per week

SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bilingualism considered an asset (English or French and other languages)
  • Demonstrated ability in program area such as education, well-being or social programs
  • Competency in leading virtual programming
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Current and Satisfactory Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Actively participate in volunteer orientation and on-going training sessions
  • Assist the volunteer coordinator in planning and organizing programs and activities
  • Arrives to the program location prior to the start time to assemble the necessary supplies and equipment and respects the scheduled start and finish time of the pro-gram or activity
  • Effectively engages the participants in the program material
  • Ensures safety and security of the group at all times by enforcing rules and regulations
  • Understands emergency protocols, reporting of accidents and evacuation procedures
  • Upholds open communication with the Volunteer Coordinator
  • Demonstrates the YMCA Core Values at all times
