About the role

On-site | Full-time
Location: ALS Environmental, Waterloo
Reports to: LC-MS Manager
The LC-MS Technical Specialist position will involve a significant component of research and method development in both the LC-MS extraction and instrumentation departments, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, and supporting routine testing in the LC-MS department as required.
Specific Responsibilities
  • Method development of extraction and instrumental methods to meet critical deadlines;
  • Method optimization of extraction and instrumentation methods;
  • Independently research new methods and method improvements;
  • Identify areas for potential improvement;
  • Bringing new tests on-line including method validation to support accreditation;
  • Provide competent training to other analysts;
  • Assist in the creation and archiving of initial method validation files;
  • Incorporate approved improvements in Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs);
  • Carry out all required record-keeping, documentation, quality control procedures as SOP and/or Policies state;
  • Provide back-up support for preparation and analysis of samples as required;
  • Ensure the quality of the analytical data meets ALS standards;
  • Data entry and verification;
  • Adhere to strict QA/QC requirements and all associated policies; including Initial Method Validation
  • Routine and non-routine maintenance of instrumentation;
  • Perform instrument repairs and troubleshooting;
  • Maintain knowledge in all applicable regulatory methods;
  • Assist in Internal Audits and method reviews;
  • Assist with Scientific Research and Experimental Development tax credit tracking and yearly submission;
  • Attend conferences and technical presentations on current and upcoming methodology;
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Organized and detail oriented;
  • Must be capable of working with minimal supervision; both independently and part of a team;
  • Demonstrated ability to work to deadlines;
  • Highly motivated with a positive attitude and strong work ethic;
  • Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal);
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment;
  • Excellent understanding of organics sample prep;
Required Qualifications
  • Completion of MSc degree in chemistry or related field;
  • Extensive experience in SPE, HPLC, LC-MS, LC-MS/MS method development and validation;
  • Experience with PFAS analysis in environmental samples preferred;
  • Strong computer skills;
  • Strong understanding of organic chemistry and related parameters;
Physical Demands
  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;
  • Ability to stand for a full shift;
  • You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;
  • Lift up to 30lbs and carry for short distances;
Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.
